Traveling N
about 300 km from the blue Nile Gorge you come to the town of BaharDar
a population of 54,000 situated at the southern end of Lake Tana ( 3,700
sq km). A feature of Lake Tana is the papyrus boats that can be seen
on the shore. They are made from leaves bound together ,and have been
in use since time immemorial. BaharDar is the center from which to explore
the
spectacularTisissat Falls-the largest waterfall on the Blue Nile River-
which drains the lake just to the N. The falls are 30 km South of the
town and are reached on foot from a nearby village. Visitors will be
offered trips to the falls by car, with guides, or in a papyrus boat,
all of which are quite expensive compared with the local bus from BaharDar.
The
guides can be a nuisance-if you don't want one make this clear, if you
do fix the price at the start. The most direct route,a 30 min walk,
is to proceed to the end of the village, turning right before the gate
to the power station. Then take the path to the right toward the river,
over the old bridge, reputedly built from lime, egg and milk. Turn left
after the bridge. An alternative route involves a boat crossing.
